Chess improvement is difficult but it isn't complicated. We ask our students to follow the following guidelines in order to rapidly improve their game and results.
Notating your chess tournament games is a must. Eventually it will be required at USCF and FIDE events, so the sooner you learn and get used to it the better! This will also allow your coach or stronger players to see your games and celebrate your good moves, and assist you in improving on your mistakes.
All tournament games should be entered into lichess.org. This is an excellent habit and will create a log of your tournament games for future reference.
Puzzles and tactics are an absolute must for chess improvement. Knowing and quickly identifying the tactics in the position is the foundation for your chess. Strategy can help you gain an advantage, but tactics often win or lose the game. Therefore, tactics come first! On chess.com puzzle rush and puzzle survival are recommended. On lichess.org puzzle storm and puzzle racer are excellent! And best of all is getting a book with some harder puzzles and setting them up on a real chess board.
Practice makes perfect! The more chess you play the faster you will improve. Playing lots of tournaments is best, but online training games that are 15 | 10 or slower on chess.com or lichess.org are also wonderful for improvement.
